The Importance of Hydrating your body with water

The Importance of Hydrating your body with water!

In order to have good health, you must keep your body hydrated. Our entire body uses water to maintain temperature, regulate blood pressure, aid in digestion, remove wastes, and lubricate our joints.

Most people require 6-8 glasses (8oz) of water each day, however some people may require more. If you are working out, sweating, if it’s hot outside you will require more to replenish your body. If you are pregnant or nursing you will require more fluid as your body is requiring it for two individuals. Also, if you are sick, have a fever, or have been vomiting, or have diarrhea, your body will be losing fluids faster than normal-so be sure to drink more water than usual during those times.

Signs of Dehydration:

  • Little or no urine, or urine that is darker than normal, or stronger in odor
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Feeling tired
  • Lack of concentration, feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Headache
  • No tears when crying
  • Lower back pain
  • Hungry-often times feelings of hunger are actually dehydration signs

Water makes up a large portion of our body (around 50-70%), so it is vital that we stay hydrated. Don’t wait for your body to tell you that you are thirsty, by then you are already dehydrated-be proactive! By keeping your body hydrated your body will run more effectively and efficiently.

Dehydration will slow down your metabolism, you may feel more sluggish and unproductive, and it can also affect your mood. If you haven’t had enough water, you may start to feel cranky, tired, or more irritable.

Tips to Stay Hydrated:

  • Keep a water bottle with you during the day to make it an easy and natural thing. Always the best option is go choose a refillable bottle rather than buying costly water bottles that add to plastic bottle waste.
  • Try adding a lemon, lime, or orange slice to your water to mix it up as well as increase the health benefits of the water.
  • When working out be sure to drink water before, during, and after to ensure that you are fully hydrated
  • If you have a hard time remembering to drink water-try to form a schedule. For instance, it’s best to start your day with a glass of water, one at every meal, and before you go to bed.
  • Order water when you go to a restaurant. A health option…that’s FREE!

Do not substitute alcohol, coffee, tea, or soft drinks for water. These drinks all include caffeine which can act as a mild diuretic, preventing water from traveling to the necessary parts of the body needed.

Staying hydrated is vital for optimal brain function and optimal health. Staying hydrated can also help slow the aging process, and improve the skin complexion.

I have been told that once one feels that they are thirsty they are already dehydrated. So we should keep a bit more water on hand. Also by have a glass of water first thing in the morning and last thing at night helps to clean us out.
